Track: Tackling Enterprise 2.0 Business ChallengesCulture is a major component of KM. Lack of adequate culture and high barriers to adoption are the root cause of many KM failures. Enterprise 2.0 on the other hand promises to provide low barrier and organic approaches to knowledge capture, and embraces the open and transparent culture of Web 2.0. Is Enterprise 2.0 the salvation of KM or do cultural and adoption issues still loom? More importantly, is the functionality provided by these tools mature and robust enough to qualify as knowledge management, or only simple collaboration. He coined the phrase “Enterprise 2.0” in a spring 2006 Sloan Management Review article to describe the use of Web 2.0 tools and approaches by businesses. He also began blogging at that time, both about Enterprise 2.0 and about his other research. McAfee’s blog is widely read, becoming at times one of the 10,000 most popular in the world (according to Technorati). He also maintains a Facebook profile and Twitter account. McAfee’s book on Enterprise 2.0 was published in 2009 by Harvard Business School Press. In the July / August issue of Harvard Business Review McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson published “Investing in the IT that Makes a Competitive Difference,” a summary of their research investigating IT’s links to changes in competition. This work was the first to reveal that competition began to heat up in the US in the mid 1990s – to become faster paced, more turbulent, and more winner-take-all – and that this acceleration was greater in industries that spent more on IT. This research continues, and continues to highlight that technology appears to be significantly reshaping the landscape of competition. McAfee is the author or co-author of more than fifteen scholarly articles and ninety case studies and other materials for students and teachers of technology. This work has convinced him that modern information technology is the most powerful tool available to business leaders, yet also the most misunderstood and under-appreciated resource at their disposal. In 2008 McAfee was named by the editors of the technical publishing house Ziff-Davis number 38 in their list of the “100 Most Influential People in IT.” He was also named by Baseline magazine to a separate, unranked list of the 50 most influential people in business IT that year. Track: Adoption in the Enterprise for PractitionersIt may come as no surprise that IBM has a long history with collaboration, and social computing, from text chat applications decades ago to enterprise collaboration tools of today. Enterprise 2.0 now reaching a new crescendo in IBM, in terms of deployment, and in the depth of thinking of how it is applied in the organization. If there is a Stage Zero—“How is this stuff any different than what my kid does with Facebook?”—Stage 1 is when people in the organization start recognizing: "We need our collaboration tools to integrate with our knowledge systems and enterprise databases." However, a recent survey of CIOs by the 2.0 Adoption Council shows that over 80% of CIOs have not been able to establish an ROI for E2.0 technologies. This is reflected in the widely varying pricing models of most E2.0 vendors, ranging from $3 per user to 100's of thousands of dollars for enterprise licenses. Value based pricing for E2.0 software requires a clear ROI measure. Contrast that with existing spend on E1.0 technologies in the enterprise, where clear value is reflected in healthy IT budgets. Jim Lundy is the vice president and general manager of collaboration at Saba. He is responsible for driving the strategy and global execution of Saba’s collaboration offerings. Lundy brings over 27 years of experience in both product vision and delivery execution. Most recently, Lundy was the managing vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. While at Gartner, he formed and led the Social Software and Collaboration team that focused on email, instant messaging, Web conferencing, social software, and team collaboration. Lundy also served as lead analyst on corporate learning and enterprise content management for a number of years. Prior to joining Gartner, Lundy spent 15 years at Xerox in a variety of sales, marketing, and management positions in both hardware and software business units. Lundy has a B.S. in Finance from Penn State University.
